Let rivers flow
Flow red with hate
Flow red with vengeance
Let rivers flow
Flow red with man
Flow red with child
Let rivers flow
Flow red with blood
Strom red blood
Life blood
Let rivers flow
Flow and empty
Empty into oceans
Red oceans
Red rivers
Red valleys
Red skies
To every birth red
Every child red
For whose sight is red
Breathe red
Eat red
Sleep to red
Awaken to red
Red to dawn
Red to demise
Every beat red
Pulse red
Here red
There red
Thou reek of red
Mankind that seeth red
Red of blood
Blood red

"O wave! Plunge headlong into the dark seas,
And change thyself with many a twist and turn;
Thou wast not born for tile solace of the shore;
Arise, untamed, and find a path for thyself."
- Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Hi,
I’ve been thinking about this poem for several days.
At one point I thought I understood…..then feetingly escapes me.
I surmise there is a very significance to the symbolism of red.
I’m curious……..
Curious as to what the symbolism of red is? The hatred of mankind, the boiling rage that makes one human shed the blood of another human, the inclination of human nature towards violence, war, and destruction. Red is the blood we shed.
Hope that clears it up a bit.
In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration.
In China, it signifies good luck and celibration……
Of course the use of red in your poem was not in that context……for some reason I just had a hard time connecting such violant image with you….seemed incongruous somehow…….sorry for my lack of insight.
I agree with Alan—the violence seems oddly incongruent with what I know of you, Raatkiranii (which admitedly is probably not much
).
But then I think this is more of a commentary on the violent cycles that seem to manifest in history, rather than an expression of your own feelings….I could of course be wronmg about this.
But regardless—-very vivid poem. It made me think of things that aren’t exactly comfortable, but should be thought about so that they are not forgotten.
Alan & Baekho, i sense that perhaps both of you a bit unsettled by this piece by the fact that i wrote it. Perhaps you think me to be a nice peaceful girl quite isolated by such violent emotions. I’m not, but it’s flattering that you would think of me in such a sweet manner.
Thank you for the kind consideration but I’m neither so innocent nor naive. I see and feel the violent treatment of humans towards their fellow man and it makes me angry in turn.
Baekho, though this is a commentary on the violent cycles found within history, it is also an expression of my feelings in the form of disgust. We allow our river to flow with blood and that ignites a certain rage and disgust within me.
Alan, you’re right the color red stands for many things in various cultures, societies, minds, and situations. Here though it’s simple - red is blood and rage, anger and disgust.
Finally, on this blog and judging by most of my posts here this piece does seem incongruous to my “style” but you never know what a person is capable of feelings - what emotions run deep in our currents.
Thank you, both of you, for your comments and feedback. It was honest and I appreciate that.
Hi Raatkiranii,
I hope you don’t think I was implying you were naive! You definitely seem to be a very worldly (and certainly a very well read) person, so I apologize if that is how I made it seem.
If this blog is anything to judge by, you are probably quite talented at channeling that anger into creative and constructive outlets.
Baekho - There’s no need to apologize. I honestly do feel your comment, every one’s comment here, is critical to me. And no, i don’t think you believe me to be naive intellectually but i know you were…surprised at the tone of this particular piece especially coming from me. But believe me, nothing you or Alan said was in the least bit insulting. It was constructive. So honestly, thank you.
Hello there,
first of all, thank u Raatkiranii for selecting my photo. What I wanted to express is our earths pain, and how much it is already bleeding, but it seems that nobody sees it, everybody continues to hurt our mother earth. We are all earth.
Im happy that my picture inspired you a little to think of all this in such a poetry way. Thanks!

nixArt - Actually, I should be thanking you for sharing such a powerful image. I spent quite some time searching for an image that would match the emotion I felt while writing this piece and your photo was without a doubt the one and only choice once I came across it. So, THANK YOU.
Also, I agree with you in your sentiments towards nature and earth. Nature is what sustains us, the earth is its abode, and we, its inhabitants who benefit from it, seem to be hell bent on destroying the hand that feeds us. Your photo, to me at least, defintly conveys the message which you wish to express. It fits both our purposes and messages well, the earth that bleeds and humanity that draws the blood.
Thank you dropping by. I’m very glad you did!
